1993 Fender Prophesy II  Bass

Project Number: 21001
Project Type: Refinish / restore
Project status: Complete, Sold

This bass was acquired from the original owner in the fall of 2021. It was original and fully functional condition with a factory “antique burst” body and a gloss black headstock as shown to the right. This particular model was made in Japan between 1991 and 1993 while Fender was reorganizing its operations in the US and was also marketed under the brand name “Heartfield by Fender”. By the serial number, this particular bass was made in 1993.

These basses featured a thinline Jazz-like body, slim necks and an unusual 2+2 headstock. Electronics are the same as were found in the Fender Precision Bass Special made about the same time (passive P/J pickups with an on-board 9 volt battery powered pre-amp). Initial plan was to repair the finish but it was pretty rough with several dings in the headstock and body. As these were not easily repaired, the guitar was completely stripped and sanded to bare wood. The body was then dyed with a mix of brown and red dyes and finished with hand rubbed Tru-Oil. The neck and headstock were left natural and finished with hand rubbed Tru-Oil.

Includes new 45-105 D’Addario strings (EADG tuning) and a new Tusq nut.
